The 8th annual Moritz Ride for Heroes will be on April 17, 2010. This year we feature 6 new scenic routes, ranging from 8 miles through 76 miles. And since we’ve moved the ride to mid-April, Bluebonnets should be in bloom!

Note: Large truck traffic and the severe winter have caused Baker Rd south of Weatherford to be unsuitable for bicycles. As a result, we have made changes to the three longest routes. The new routes are each slightly shorter. The old 46-mile route is now 44 miles; the old 62-mile route is now 60 miles; and the old 80-mile route is now 76 miles. The Routes page has been updated with the new routes. The registration process will still show the old route lengths.

Start Time

Start time for all routes is 8:30 AM

Basic Route Information

Route lengths are 8, 22, 34, 44, 60, and 76 miles (Moritz Challenge). The routes will not be supported after 3:30 PM. Please pick a route distance that you can complete comfortably within that time.

Parking:

Adequate parking is available at the high school. Please make sure you arrive in plenty of time to get parked and ready to ride. See Directions page for specific travel information.

Maps and route markings:

Maps are available (see Routes page) for downloading and printing. GPX, CRS, and TCX files are also available for those with GPS-enabled bike computers. Please come prepared. There may not be maps available at the registration area. However, you should not need a map. We take great care in marking our routes clearly. Expect both roadside signs, arrows on the road and volunteers helping you along the way. If you do get off course, you can call for sag support, 817-368-1604.

What to expect when riding in East Parker County:

Many people who ride here for the first time are surprised at the number of hills. Parker County is not flat. Bring your climbing legs. The roads are a combination of smooth state highways and county roads. Heavy truck traffic associated with gas drilling has been tough on our roads. We do try and pick the best roads possible for both safety and comfort; however, you will experience some rough areas, pot holes and some short sections of chip seal that cannot be avoided. Most of the roads are smooth and comfortable to ride on.

Rest Stops:

The Ride for Heroes is proud of our rest stops. We have clubs and organizations from Aledo High School responsible for decorating and handing out goodies so there is no shortage of friendly faces to help you out at each stop. Every rest stop will have the basics including oranges, bananas, water and sports drink. Most rest stops will also feature other goodies including home made cookies. All rest stops are manned by an EMT.
